WHAT CAN BE DONE to change the country for the better? One way is to build up and strengthen the middle-class. Every country that has made leaps and bounds in its social and economic progress did so only after the growth of its middle-class. This same spirit of nation building drives PLDT-SME Nation to support SMEs (small-to-medium enterprises) and as a result, create a strong, vibrant and thriving middle-class.
“When it comes to wealth creation and providing jobs and opportunities to a greater number of people, our country owes a lot to SMEs. The more SMEs thrive, the better it is for our economy and our society. Only then can we generate jobs, income and opportunities that our workers, professionals and graduates need.
“SMEs form the backbone of the Philippine economy, generating more than 90% of income. More SMEs mean more jobs, more income and more purchasing power. Filipino entrepreneurship is a key to creating a strong economy for the country,” says Kat Luna-Abelarde PLDT vice-president and head of PLDT-SME Nation.
SME ambassadors
This is why PLDT-SME Nation has appointed twelve “Pinoy Bossings” as part of its “Bossing Ako” campaign, which seeks to spark the ingenuity of Filipino entrepreneurship to achieve a two-fold result: 1) encourage a new generation of Filipino entrepreneurs to set up their businesses; and 2) inspire Filipino SMEs to continue striving in their quest to build a successful business.
These SME Ambassadors provide the model and inspiration for would-be entrepreneurs and SMEs. The success stories of these SME icons provide templates and sources of wisdom gained through dedication, perseverance and experience—all to help SMEs overcome challenges and fulfill their dreams.
“The success stories of our Pinoy Bossings are a rich mine of valuable wisdom and inspiration. You can learn from formal schooling. You can learn from seminars. You can even buy a book and learn about business. But nothing compares to the personal, real-life, honest-to-goodness experience of a successful entrepreneur. When you meet a successful entrepreneur, you are looking for a living proof of what actually works in the real world of business.
“This is why we’ve chosen a select group of entrepreneurs as Pinoy Bossings. They are all cream of the crop in their respective industries. Through their knowledge, experience and success stories, we hope to impart encouragement, street smarts and practical know-how to SMEs. Through these success stories, we also wish to spark the dream of entrepreneurship to the younger generation,” says PLDT-SME Nation Marketing Head Amil Azurin.
PLDT Chair Manny V. Pangilinan tops the selection of Pinoy Bossings as the ultimate bossing. SME icons and ambassadors in their own right, the list also includes: Mother Lily Monteverde of Regal Films for starting as an SME into becoming a pillar of the Filipino film industry; Jay Aldeguer of Island Souvenirs for promoting his passion and love for the country through his tourism souvenirs business; and Joey Concepcion, entrepreneurship advocate and Founding Trustee of Go Negosyo.
Notable Pinoy Bossings that have made their passion their business as well are Les Reyes of Reyes HairCutters, Gardy Cruz of Pancit Malabon Express; Raphael and Jenni Soon of North Park, Ronald Pineda of Folded & Hung; Benjamin Liuson of The Generics Pharmacy, Darius and Carlos Hizon of Pampanga’s Best; Louie Gutierrez and Dulzzi Ocampo Gutierrez of Silverworks; and Vicki Belo and Cristalle Henares as the mother-daughter tandem for beauty and medical practice.
“The whole message of the ‘Bossing Ako’ campaign is this: You can be your own boss. You can take charge of your own destiny and become as successful as you want to be, on your terms. After this campaign, we hope that even more Filipinos will able to say with conviction and commitment: ‘Bossing ako’, says Luna-Abelarde
A big launch of “Bossing Ako” is set for mid-June. This is followed by a grand celebration of the “MVP Bossing Ako Awards Night.”
